Fire Safety Tips for Christmas (Christmas Tree and Christmas Lights Safety Tips!)

| Return |

According to the National Fire Protection Association, each year the top three days for home fires (caused by candles) are Christmas, New Year's Day, and New Year's Eve. For these upcoming holidays, be safe by following these fire safety tips.

Christmas Tree Safety

When choosing a live Christmas tree, get one that has green needles that aren't falling off. Cut off the bottom two inches. Water your tree daily because well-watered trees almost never catch fire. After four weeks, the tree needs to be discarded. While artificial trees pose little fire risk, a once living, now dry tree is a risk.

Christmas Lights Safety

Since light strings are labeled for indoor or outdoor use, place them accordingly. Damaged light strings should be discarded. Three is the maximum number of light strings that should be plugged into each other. Plug additional light strings into a power strip. Don't exceed the capacity of your power strips and extension cords. The lights on both artificial and live trees should be turned off before you go to bed or leave home.

Candle and Fireplace Safety

Keep lit candles at least one foot from anything flammable. Lit candles should never be unattended. Put them out before leaving the room or sleeping. Have your fireplace professionally cleaned before using it each season. Keep a screen in front of the fireplace. Put hot ash in a metal container and allow the ash to cool for 24 hours before disposal.

We hope you and your loved ones enjoy a safe holiday season, but if you need assistance with fire restoration we are available 24/7 to help with the following fire related damages:
