Your rights as a homeowner to choose your own restoration company

28 May, 2018 | Household Tips | Return|

No one ever expects they will be faced with damage to their homes from fire or water damage, but it happens somewhere every single day. And the first thing you do? You contact your insurance company for help in handling the situation. After all, you expect you can trust your agent, as you have faithfully paid your homeowner’s insurance bill on time since the day you purchased your home.

However, they may not have your best interest in mind, as the Insurance companies’ primary concern is to save money. Often, they will suggest that you use one of their “preferred providers” to handle the restoration process to return your home to it’s pre-loss state. Frequently, insurance claims agents will send one of their providers to your home immediately after you report your damage to control the claim and decide how your personal property should be repaired.

What are Preferred Providers?

Preferred providers, often, have a mutually beneficial relationship with insurance companies. It is a common practice for these providers to offer their services at a reduced rate, and in exchange, the insurance companies continue to send work their way. As a result, the needs of the family who has a damaged or destroyed home are often overlooked.

You Have Control

The good news? You, the homeowner, have the right to choose your own restoration company. You cannot be forced to leave the restoration of your home to any company who does not consider your needs their number one priority.
